THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY (NU) Cheer Squadron snatched the crown from the three-time winner, UP Pep Squad for Champion and six other pep squads at the recently-concluded UAAP Cheerdance Competition 2013 held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City a few minutes ago.
With stunts and dance moves clean and precised, NU got a total score of 696.5 points, 76 points ahead of the second placer, defending champion UP Pep Squad with 620.5 points and De La Salle University with 596.5 points that finished third.
NU’s win made a history as this is the first UAAP Cheer Dance championship crown for the university.
NU received a cash prize of P340,000, a Samsung product each team member and a trophy. UP PEP Squad, which slipped to second place this year got P200,000 in cash, a Samsung product and a trophy while DLSU Animo Squad got P140,000 cash prize, a Samsung product and a trophy.
NU also dominated the ‘Group Stunts’ category followed by the Far Eastern University at second place and the University of Santo Tomas at third place.
Jhereeka Mae Bernabe, Head coach of the NU Pep Squad said each member of her team really maximized their time to perfect the stunts. The win is a product of their five months of hard work.
NU member Adrian Alban said they just trusted in themselves and prayed to win the competition long dominated by big schools like UP and UST.

2013 UAAP Cheerdance Competition LIVE BLOG:
Far Eastern University (FEU) was first to showcase their moves. From last year’s second placer with a jungle theme, FEU returns with splits on air and acrobatic moves that left audience in awe. The lifts and thumblings on air were great. If they were to be faulted, that would be a few errors on syncronization.
My Score: 90%
The three-time defending Champion, University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad was in party mode today. With great stunts, great dance moves and the most awesome toss and pyramid by far, are they ready to bring home the bacon once more? UP Pep Squad still showcased a strong performance overall. But with two visible errors, will they retain supremacy in the competition or we are now ready for a new champion?
My UP Score: 92%
The fiery University of the East opened with strong stunts. They’re best in costume so far (as seen on TV). They tried to pull off even better stunts but failed in some of those. Nevertheless, they showcased a great show.
My UE Score: 89%
DLSU Animo Squad is the new competitor to beat this year with that perfect execution. Though slow at first, the green archers maintained the almost flawless performance from beginning till the end. With a unique military-like uniform, DLSU just snatched the first place from the UP Pep Squad in there.
My DLSU Score: 93%
From third place last year, Normal University (NU) wearing bald head and their blue uniform (oh that bra!) owned the Araneta Coliseum with their breathtaking stunts. Though choreography wasn’t that difficult, their perfection of the routines, which for me is even stronger this year deserve a point higher than UP (yep, and a point higher than DLSU). Definitely my winner!
My NU Score: 93.1%
UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe, the eight-time winner of the UAAP Cheerdance Competition had a good start but failed to take off. They are definitely the weakest among the first performers this year. Maybe their cherios should consider working on their diet?
My UST Score: 78%
Ateneo Blue Babble Battalion: They may just have the simplest usual uniform, but the Ateneans did make their school proud with their performance. Not on my Top 3 though but they could snatch the third spot from UP Pep Squad should the judges find it better or should the last team fail to outperform them.
My Ateneo Score: 90.5%
Last to perform was Adamson PEP Squad. Those feathery costume and the take on it was beyond usual and has a lot of promise. Just that, they failed to perfect their stunts.
My Adamson Score: 85%
GROUP STUNTS COMPETITION:
FEU did it almost perfectly. My score: 95%
UP Pep Squad failed in some stunts. My score: 82%
DLSU Animo Squad: My score: 86%
National University: 98%
